ORCHID is an affirmation of my belief that if one holds fast to dreams, they do turn to reality. For five decades of my life, I treaded the conventional path. All this time, my passion for creating beauty with our traditional weaves was put on hold because of the priorities of the moment. And, when the opportune time arrived, what was once a distant dream nurtured tenderly over the years, found full manifestation through ORCHID.
I visualized ORCHID as the presentation of a hybrid collection of traditional Indian wear. The main thrust is, of course, on the fabulous weaves of my native state, Assam.
ORCHID is my small attempt to open up the limitless possibilities of how the incredibly beautiful traditional weaves of India can be worn with style and grace.
The mekhela-sador, a unique two piece outfit, has now acquired a pan-Indian identity because of the innovations brought about by a new breed of amazingly talented Assamese designers.
My maiden collection has been picked from resources all over the state. I have curated what appeals to my aesthetics and have tried to give a bolder and more sophisticated look to our traditional sets and sarees by coordinating them with blouses and jewelry from across India. Fashion trends are always in a state of flux. But love of clothes is inherent in a woman's DNA.
